There are so many things that our grandparents were better off with… Even though we are now spoilt for choice with technology, transportation between countries has never been so good, in many ways we have never been this worse off. And few things have suffered more than families and relationships.
Even though I am not that old ☺, I still remember that nobody in my home would have dinner unless everyone would be sitting at the table. You could be famished but no one would eat until dad came home. Our dinners would take way over an hour because everyone would take time to catch up, speak about the funny things that happened during the day, and then afterwards we would probably sit in front of the TV cozied up to each other for about 45 minutes.
At that time these dinners didn’t feel that special because they were a normal day-to-day occurrence. But it’s only now that I understand how great they were at keeping us together. It was in many of these dinners that I would learn very valuable things about character and integrity from my parents.
Unfortunately the 45 minutes in front of the TV for many families has turned into hours, and the dinners together no longer happen.
People would also get married before and they would do everything to make their relationship work. Think about it, many relationships lasted through the Second World War, the great depression, flower power of the 60s and 70s, and still some of these couples are together until today.
Everything around us today is so disposable that they have passed this mentality onto relationships as well. At the slightest inkling of a problem in a marriage, many jump ship and dispose of that marriage that could have worked, should they have chosen to fight for it.
There are indeed many things now in our time that we should embrace. After all, you wouldn’t be reading this message on a website 25 years ago. Technology has made this possible. But perhaps some of the values that old timers in our family used to hold onto, should never go out of fashion.
